Who can register a .co.uk domain?

A .co.uk domain can contain letters from a to z, numbers from 0 to 9, and hyphens. A hyphen cannot appear at the beginning or end of the registered label. Spaces and special characters such as ampersands or hash symbols are not permitted.

Registrar interfaces commonly enforce a label length of 1–63 characters. The complete domain also has to comply with DNS length limits and registry validation. Internationalized characters are not generally offered for this extension through the referenced registrar channel.

Nameserver requirements

The gaining registrar must also have an incoming transfer request for the domain. When the tag and request match, the registration moves while retaining its remaining term. A successful transfer does not automatically add another registration year.

Before starting, confirm the destination registrar’s exact IPS tag and transfer instructions. An incorrect tag can delay the transfer or route the domain to the wrong provider. 

Cancellation and restoration

A .co.uk registration can only be intentionally cancelled by its owner through the process required by Nominet. Cancellation should be treated as permanent because the name can eventually become available for registration by another party.

Expired or deleted domains may be restorable during the applicable recovery period. A de-tagged domain may require the owner to re-tag it through Nominet before the new registrar can manage it. Restoration availability and charges depend on the domain’s current lifecycle state and registrar policy.
